Nha Trang City in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam has witnessed a notable surge in the number of Chinese tourists, as well as visitors from South Korea and Russia for the 2024 Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

A representative of Danang Holiday Co. Ltd., which specializes in welcoming Chinese travelers in Nha Trang City, said the number of Chinese tourists visiting the city has climbed, with the majority of them coming from Tianjin, Jinan, Shanxi, and Shenyang.

“Our company welcomes some 10 charter flights with 200 passengers on board. Many groups of Chinese tourists have arrived in Nha Trang and planned to celebrate Tet there,” the representative said.

“They will stay [in the city] for two to three days, then some choose to travel to Da Lat [in the Central Highlands] or Da Nang City [in central Vietnam].”

According to Do Thi Van Anh, deputy director of Khang Thai Vietnam Travel Co. Ltd., the opening of many air routes from China to Khanh Hoa has helped bring a large number of tourists from the northern neighbor to the south-central Vietnamese province.

Chinese tourists favor Khanh Hoa because the province celebrates Tet, shares cultural similarities, and boasts a favorable climate, particularly appealing to visitors from Chinese localities still experiencing cold weather.

The company has initiated promotional programs, and the reported number of Chinese tourists booking tours to Nha Trang for this Tet is approximately 20-30 percent higher than the figures recorded in the last two months of 2023, Anh said.

“Chinese are fond of experiencing Vietnamese Tet, so we have designed tours involving lion dances and calligraphy,” Van Anh said.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the two countries, China was the largest source market of Khanh Hoa.

The revival of Chinese tourists this Tet is a positive signal, said Nguyen Thi Le Thanh, director of the provincial Department of Tourism.

In May last year, the department paid a trip to promote Khanh Hoa’s tourism in Sichuan Province’s Chengdu City and Shanghai City and invite Chinese agencies and enterprises to join fam trips to the Vietnamese province.

In 2024, the province will persist in enhancing promotional programs in the Chinese market and introducing new products to cater to the needs of Chinese tourists, Thanh said.

During the Tet holiday, from February 6 to 15, Cam Ranh International Airport in the province is expected to welcome over 850 flights with 150,000 international tourists on board.

Of them, there will be about 60,000 Chinese travelers on 430 flights, or 21 flights per day, an airport leader informed.

There will be also 370 flights carrying 66,000 South Koreans, 40 flights with some 6,000 passengers from Russia, 20 flights with 6,000 visitors from Kazakhstan, 14 flights with nearly 2,000 Malaysian tourists, and 20 flights with 3,000 travelers from Thailand during the period.
