Dead four-faced street clock left neglected for years in Hanoi

A large four-faced street clock atop a post office building located at an extremely busy intersection in Ha Dong, an inner-city district of Hanoi, has remained unfixed after it stopped working a couple of years ago.

The Ha Dong post office building, situated at an intersection of Quang Trung and Chu Van An Streets, is considered to have the most strategically advantageous location in the area.

However, the dead clock situated atop the building is the primary feature that catches the attention of road users as they pass by or come to a halt at the intersection’s red light.

One clock face looking toward Quang Trung Street lost all of its clock hands, while the one looking toward Chu Van An Street stopped working. The status of the two others remains invisible.

No one has fixed this dead clock since it stopped ticking more than two years ago, Nguyen Dinh Duong, a motorbike taxi driver in the area, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

Duong expressed his perplexity, stating that he was unaware of the reasons behind the lack of repair for the non-functional clock in such a prominent location, which attracts significant attention from road users.

The Ha Dong District authorities are not responsible for managing the operation of the clock, which is owned by the post office, a local official told Tuoi Tre on Wednesday afternoon.

However, given its prime location, the district administration will remind the post office to fix the clock, the official said.

A leader from the post office informed Tuoi Tre on Thursday morning that the clock’s motor has been removed for repairs, with the process expected to take approximately one month.

The leader revealed that the clock was installed atop the post office building a long time ago. It was out of order again after being fixed some five years back.
