German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier shared his hope that more Vietnamese nationals will work in Germany as the European country faces a looming labor shortage at a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Wednesday.

Steinmeier met with PM Chinh before flying to Ho Chi Minh City to participate in some diplomatic activities. He left Vietnam for his country on Wednesday night.

The two leaders reached a consensus to develop a deeper partnership in workforce training and education.

The German president also hoped that Vietnamese employees will be given more opportunities to work in Germany.

According to German news outlets, the country’s shortage of skilled workers is becoming a headache among German leaders.

The German Economic Institute said that some 630,000 positions in Germany were left vacant in 2022 due to a lack of qualified workers.

Last year, Germany introduced immigration rule reforms to attract more skilled foreign workers.

At his meeting with the German president, PM Chinh proposed that his German guest help to create favorable conditions for over 200,000 Vietnamese to continue working and living in Germany.

The German leader shared that he highly valued the presence of the Vietnamese community in Germany and sees it as a critical part of the relationship between the two countries.

PM Chinh assessed the German president’s Vietnam visit as a new driver of the Vietnam – Germany strategic partnership, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He affirmed that Vietnam always appreciates Germany’s position and role in the region and the world, as well as desires to cement the multifaceted cooperative relationship with the European nation.

PM Chinh and German President Steinmeier also called on German firms to do business and expand their reach in Vietnam, especially in the realms of energy, railway, medical equipment, and infrastructure.
