Moonchild Cafe is a new hip cafe that has opened along Jalan Besar near the junction with Sturdee Road. It is run by the folks behind the ever-popular Atlas Coffeehouse in Bukit Timah, Supernova Cafe @ Tanjong Katong and The Neptune. The new cafe draws in the crowds with the tried and tested formula of combining well executed comfort food and easy-on-the-eye decor. And good coffee, of course.
Where is Moonchild Cafe?
It is a big modern restaurant along the Jalan Besar main road. Its light, almost minimalist outlook makes it stand out among its more traditional looking neighbours. You can also look out for the bright signboard with “Moonchild” name in hippie groovy font. It was a challenge driving there as Google maps directed us to the main road which has few parking lots. The one-way roads make it hard to get into the smaller roads behind where more parking is available. For a future visit, it will be easier to navigate to Sturdee Residences which is just behind the cafe. There are ample public lots in this neighbourhood.
Big Bright Cafe at Jalan Besar
Once we stepped in, we felt like we had escaped from the noisy Jalan Besar area into an oasis of calm. The cafe is much larger than it looks on the outside. There are different seating areas with different characters. We arrived just after 11 am on a weekday when it was moderately busy. A short queue started forming from 12 pm. Since this is a no-reservations cafe, picking the right time to go is important. From the Google reviews, it seems that weekend queues can get quite long.

From 11 am to closing time, the lunch menu (with substantial dishes such as pasta, burgers and meat dishes) is made available.
What We Ate
Our food and drink choices for our lunch at Moonchild cafe were: burnt Brussels sprouts ($13), Scallop Rose Mafaldine ($23.90), Really Nice Mushrooms on Toast ($19.50) and cappuccino.
Although it was just a side dish, the Brussels sprouts stole the show. The grilled vegetables were crisp and nicely ‘burnt’. Nice whether eaten on their own or mixed into the pasta and the egg and mushroom dishes.
We saw the scallop and pasta dish receiving good reviews and so had to order it on our first visit here. We thought it was quite nice but not spectacular. The star ingredient was the mafaldine pasta. It looked attractive with its ribboned edges and tasted good with bouncy al dente texture. The scallops were the icing on the cake.
A plainer dish, the grilled mushrooms on toast was not bad either. Once the runny egg yolks were released, the gooey mix of egg, grilled mushrooms, spinach and shallots were easily soaked up by the bread to make a very tasty combo. We will be happy to eat this again.
It was a beautiful cup of cappuccino. The latte art was cleanly drawn with high definition. It tasted as good as it looks.
Overall, an enjoyable lunch at a new trendy cafe in Jalan Besar.
